ITR Filing Deadline Not Extended: Income Tax Department Confirms, Dismisses Fake Notice

The Income Tax Department on Sunday clarified that reports claiming the Income Tax Return (ITR) filing deadline has been extended till September 30, 2025, are fake. The official due date for filing ITRs remains September 15, 2025.

Taking to its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the department urged taxpayers to ignore misleading messages circulating on social media. It further advised them to rely only on the Income Tax India official account for authentic updates.

What Did the Fake Notice Claim?

A forged notice was widely shared online, alleging that the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) had extended the ITR deadline till September 30, citing “system readiness” and “stakeholder concerns.”

However, the Income Tax Department confirmed this to be misinformation. The department reiterated:

“The due date for filing ITRs remains 15.09.2025.”

Previous Extension & Portal Issues

Initially, the deadline for filing returns was set as July 31, 2025, but the deadline was extended till September 15 due to technical glitches, including slowdowns in the portal and mismatches in data.

On Saturday, thanking the taxpayers and professionals alike for their cooperation, the I-T department announced that over 6 crore ITRs had been filed for the Assessment Year 2025-26.

“Thank you, taxpayers & tax professionals, for helping us reach the milestone of 6 crore Income Tax Returns (ITRs) as of now and still counting. We urge those who haven’t filed to do so at the earliest to avoid last-minute rush,” the department posted on X.
