Income Tax Return Deadline Extension 2025 LIVE: Will Govt Push ITR Filing Date Beyond September 15?
Income Tax Return (ITR) Deadline 2025: With 5.3 crore returns filed so far, taxpayers seek an extension beyond September 15. Will the government grant more time for AY 2025-26?
Taxpayers demand ITR filing extension as 5.3 crore returns filed; deadline of September 15, 2025, nears with 2.7 crore returns still pending.

As the extended ITR filing deadline of September 15, 2025, approaches, over 5.3 crore returns have already been filed. However, taxpayers and chartered accountants continue to demand more time due to portal glitches and refund delays. Will the government announce another extension?
Current ITR Deadline and Background
The last date to file Income Tax Returns (ITR) for AY 2025-26 (FY 2024-25) is September 15, 2025. Earlier, the deadline was set for July 31 but was extended by 46 days in May due to delays in updated ITR forms and system preparedness.
Now, with the revised deadline just days away, lakhs of taxpayers are urging the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) to grant an additional extension, citing technical glitches, slow ITR processing, and refund status issues.
Taxpayers’ and Experts’ Concerns
Industry bodies such as the Karnataka State Chartered Accountants Association (KSCAA), the CIRC of ICAI, and the Advocates Tax Bar Association (ATBA) have requested the Finance Ministry to extend the ITR due date to October 15, 2025, and the tax audit report deadline to November 30, 2025.
Experts caution that despite the demands, taxpayers should not delay filings. Missing the deadline could invite penalties under Section 234F and may also cause refund delays.
ITR Filing Progress So Far
- 5.3 crore ITRs have been filed till September 11, 2025, according to the Income Tax Department.
- Based on last year’s numbers, nearly 8 crore ITRs are expected this year.
- That leaves 2.7 crore returns pending in just 5 days, requiring an average of 54 lakh filings per day — far higher than the current daily filing pace of under 20 lakh.
- This massive gap has further strengthened calls for another extension.
Government’s Stance So Far
The government has not issued any official statement on whether the deadline will be pushed further. Last year, despite heavy demands, the ITR deadline was not extended beyond July 31. The Income Tax Department continues to advise taxpayers to file early to avoid last-minute server issues.
