A personal loss of Naaz Ozair sparked a remarkable journey of innovation that is now helping reduce India’s plastic waste.
Bihar youth transforms corn husks into eco-friendly, sustainable products

After a personal loss, a youth from Bihar, Naaz Ozair transformed corn husks once burned as waste into sustainable, eco-friendly products, turning grief into innovation that tackles plastic pollution and promotes environmental health.
Seven years ago, Muzaffarpur-based engineer Naaz Ozair faced a tragedy that would change the course of his life. The untimely death of his young nephew to cancer left him questioning the hidden health hazards surrounding daily life, particularly the plastic used in food packaging and disposable products. Determined to find safer alternatives, Naaz embarked on a mission to combine health consciousness with environmental sustainability.
His search led him to an unexpected resource: corn husks. Traditionally discarded or burned by farmers—contributing to air pollution—corn husks, he realized, had the potential to be transformed into eco-friendly products. This discovery inspired Naaz to take a bold step: he quit his stable engineering job to dedicate himself entirely to research and development.
For five years, Naaz tirelessly experimented with different processes and materials. His perseverance paid off when he successfully developed biodegradable products including chocolate wrappers, disposable cups, plates, bags, and even banners—all crafted from corn husks. His innovation was formally recognized in February 2024 when he secured a patent for his process.
Today, Naaz’s venture produces and sells over 1,000 corn husk-based products every day. By converting agricultural waste into usable, eco-friendly items, the initiative is helping cut down plastic waste while providing an additional income source for local farmers in Bihar, where corn is grown three times a year.
The impact of his work has not gone unnoticed. Naaz has earned accolades from IIT Patna and the Bihar Startup Program, and his products have drawn commercial attention, including a ₹30 lakh order from Indian Railways. His journey exemplifies how innovation driven by personal purpose can yield tangible benefits for both people and the planet.
From a devastating personal loss to a breakthrough in sustainable living, Naaz Ozair’s story is a testament to the power of resilience, creativity, and commitment. By turning grief into green innovation, he is inspiring a movement where everyday choices can align with environmental responsibility.
