El Niño drives high summer temperatures in Hyderabad

Hyderabad is currently experiencing unusually high temperatures, with the mercury soaring as high as 39.4 degrees Celsius. This surge in temperature has been attributed to the presence of El Nino conditions, a climate pattern characterized by warmer-than-average sea surface temperatures in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had forecasted this elevation in temperatures for March, April, and May in Hyderabad and other parts of the country due to El Nino.

According to data from the Telangana State Development Planning Society (TSDPS), several areas in Hyderabad have witnessed temperatures exceeding 38 degrees Celsius. It is anticipated that the temperatures may continue to rise, possibly reaching 40 degrees Celsius soon.

El Nino's impact extends beyond Hyderabad, affecting weather patterns globally. This phenomenon has historically been associated with droughts in India, with 13 out of 18 droughts in the past century linked to El Nino. The frequency of El Nino years has increased over time, indicating its growing influence on weather patterns.
