Despite the reopening of 32 airports across northern and western India, leading carriers IndiGo and Air India have cancelled multiple flights on May 13, citing security concerns arising from heightened India-Pakistan tensions.

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) had announced the resumption of civilian operations on Monday, three days after the temporary closure was extended to May 15. However, following a nighttime drone interception by Indian air defence forces in the Samba sector, airlines decided to suspend select services to ensure passenger safety.

Air India Suspends Multiple Routes

Air India announced the cancellation of its two-way flights to and from Jammu, Leh, Jodhpur, Amritsar, Bhuj, Jamnagar, Chandigarh, and Rajkot for May 13.

“In view of the latest developments and keeping your safety in mind, these flights are cancelled for today. We are closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates as needed,” the airline said on its official X (formerly Twitter) account. Passengers were advised to contact the airline’s call centre or check its website for further assistance.

IndiGo Follows Suit

IndiGo also issued a statement confirming flight cancellations on May 13 to and from Jammu, Amritsar, Chandigarh, Leh, Srinagar, and Rajkot.

“With safety as our highest priority, we regret the disruption this may cause to your travel plans,” IndiGo posted on X. The airline urged passengers to check their flight status via its app or website before heading to the airport.

Background: Airports Previously Affected

The following 32 airports were impacted by the NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) issued due to India-Pakistan military tensions, but were later reopened:

Adampur, Ambala, Amritsar, Awantipur, Bathinda, Bhuj, Bikaner, Chandigarh, Halwara, Hindon, Jaisalmer, Jammu, Jamnagar, Jodhpur, Kandla, Kangra (Gaggal), Keshod, Kishangarh, Kullu-Manali (Bhuntar), Leh, Ludhiana, Mundra, Naliya, Pathankot, Patiala, Porbandar, Rajkot (Hirasar), Sarsawa, Shimla, Srinagar, Thoise, and Uttarlai.

Defence Engagements Prompt Re-Evaluation

The decision to cancel flights comes after Indian forces intercepted Pakistani drones in the Samba region on Monday night. Red streaks in the sky and loud explosions were reported as air defence systems engaged the aerial threats. Army officials confirmed a small number of drones entered Indian airspace, but assured that the situation remained under control.

Aviation Ministry Responds

Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu has scheduled a high-level meeting with airline representatives on Tuesday to review the ongoing impact on flight operations and passenger safety.

Sources say the agenda will likely include discussion on operational disruptions, airspace constraints, and potential financial implications for airlines. Indian carriers operating international routes from the north have reportedly had to reroute flights due to Pakistani airspace restrictions, leading to longer flight durations and higher fuel costs.

Delhi Airport Operations Continue

Delhi airport authorities have stated that regular flight operations are ongoing. However, they warned that some delays may occur due to enhanced security checks and evolving airspace conditions.

“Passengers are advised to arrive early and stay updated on their flight status,” the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security stated via X.
