Qualcomm on Wednesday introduced its next-generation flagship chip, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, at the Snapdragon Summit in Hawaii. The processor is expected to power top Android smartphones from Samsung, Xiaomi, Honor, and OnePlus.

Each new chipset generation delivers noticeable boosts in speed and efficiency, and Qualcomm claims the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 is the fastest mobile CPU currently available. Beyond raw performance, the chip includes several specialized features designed to enhance AI, camera, and audio capabilities.

The new processor supports Qualcomm’s Personal Scribe, an agentic AI assistant that can learn from a user’s routines and offer recommendations or take actions automatically. Personal Scribe operates through the company’s Sensing Hub, which tracks behavior patterns across apps and services. It can suggest ways to free up time, optimize schedules, or handle tasks, creating a more personalized AI experience that integrates directly with the device’s hardware.

Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 introduces advanced video capabilities for mobile content creators. It is the first mobile platform to support the Advanced Professional Video Codec, allowing HDR video capture that maintains quality during editing. This ensures smoother, sharper, and more detailed footage on phones that use the chipset, complementing each manufacturer’s unique camera software and hardware setups.

The processor also brings significant audio improvements. Snapdragon Audio Sense enables 24-bit audio recording with features like wind noise reduction, audio zoom, and HDR sound capture, reducing the need for external microphones. For playback, Qualcomm’s XPAN technology allows wireless headphones to connect via Wi-Fi, delivering high-quality 24-bit, 96kHz lossless audio while still supporting calls, messages, and AI assistant interactions without being tethered to the phone.
