In a major announcement that impacts millions of users, Microsoft has confirmed that support for Windows 10 will officially end on October 14, 2025. While feature updates and direct technical support will cease after this date, users will continue to receive select security protections and app updates for several years beyond.

What’s Changing After October 2025

Once Windows 10 reaches its end-of-support date, Microsoft will stop releasing security patches, feature enhancements, and general updates for the operating system. However, two critical services will continue to function with ongoing support:

1. Microsoft 365 Apps

  • Apps like Word, Excel, Outlook, and other Microsoft 365 tools will remain supported on Windows 10.
  • Security updates for these apps will continue until October 10, 2028.
  • Feature updates (such as UI changes and new tools) will be available through August 2026.

2. Microsoft Defender Antivirus

  • Security intelligence updates for Microsoft’s built-in antivirus software will continue until October 2028, keeping users protected against emerging malware and threats.

These measures mean that users who rely on Microsoft 365 apps and Windows Defender can still use Windows 10 with basic protection in place for several years after official support ends.

What Windows 10 Users Should Do Next

Despite these extended services, Microsoft strongly recommends upgrading to Windows 11 to take advantage of the latest performance improvements, enhanced security features, and new AI-powered tools like Microsoft Copilot.

To check if your PC is compatible with Windows 11:

  • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update
  • Or use the PC Health Check Tool available on Microsoft’s website.

Extended Security Updates (ESU) Program

For users who cannot transition to Windows 11 immediately, Microsoft will offer Extended Security Updates (ESU):

  • This program provides critical security patches beyond 2025, either for a small fee or free through options like Microsoft Rewards.

With this phased transition, Microsoft is ensuring that users have time to prepare while still maintaining essential protection during the extended support period.
