Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia, is tightening its regulations concerning AI’s engagement with its content, thereby indicating a more assertive position on automated data scraping. The Wikimedia Foundation, which is in charge of Wikipedia, has suggested that AI developers should make use of its paid Wikimedia Enterprise service rather than picking content off the site directly.

The foundation made this assertion during a Monday publication and indicated that artificial intelligence would need to use Wikipedia content in a responsible manner and also give credit to the human contributors of the platform. The paid enterprise solution provides the possibility of using a vast amount of Wikipedia content without putting much pressure on the website’s servers, and at the same time, it would be a source of income for the nonprofit operations.

This decision is a direct result of the realization by Wikimedia that AI bots have been pretending to be real users in order to efficiently scrape large amounts of content. The foundation after implementing an upgrade to its systems that detect bots found that the majority of the activity that had been increased was due to these automated tools. At the same time, there was a reported 8 percent decline in human visits to Wikipedia, which led to concerns about the possible negative effects on volunteer editors and donor contributions.

Wikimedia Foundation Raises Key Concerns

The foundation pointed out that the recognition of the work done by the human editors is the key to online information credibility. “In the case of online information being trusted by the people, then the platforms must highlight the sources of that information and the possibilities to visit and participate in those sources,” the blog post went on to say.

A decline in human presence could result in a decline in the number of volunteers and donors, which may have an impact on the platform's long-term mission. The non-profit had earlier introduced AI-based solutions to help editors in performing repetitive tasks, improve their workflow, and translate languages. Going forward, AI algorithms may become more dependent on Wikipedia’s official APIs, or the organization may pursue legal actions against those who use the content without permission.
