With Apple traditionally unveiling new iPhones in September, the next two months are considered an inopportune time to buy any current or older iPhone models. Whether considering a new iPhone 15, the upcoming iPhone 16, or even used devices like the iPhone 14, consumers are advised to hold off purchases until the iPhone 17 lineup is officially released.

The reason is timing. Buying an iPhone between mid-July and early September generally offers less value. With the launch of new models, Apple and third-party retailers typically adjust pricing, and older devices may receive significant discounts post-release.

Though Apple maintains relatively stable pricing throughout the year, strategic buyers benefit from waiting until the release cycle begins in September. From that point through December, availability improves, promotional offers appear more frequently, and customers are more likely to secure preferred storage variants or color options. Discounted prices also become common during the festive sales in October and November.

Prospective buyers looking to purchase an iPhone should consider product lifecycle, software longevity, and hardware efficiency. Opting for a device that is three to four generations behind can lead to shorter software support and degraded battery performance, regardless of upfront savings.

Apple is on track to announce four iPhone 17 models this September, consistent with its product launch schedule since 2012. The lineup will consist of two standard variants and two Pro models. All four devices are expected to be powered by the new A19 processor and will ship with iOS 26.

New features include anti-reflective display technology for improved durability and scratch resistance. Notably, all models—including the base variants—will feature 120Hz refresh rates, a specification previously limited to the Pro lineup.

The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max are likely to receive a 48MP telephoto lens and support for 8K video recording. Apple is also reportedly introducing a design change with an aluminum camera bar replacing the square bump on the back, although this design will remain exclusive to the Pro models.

In addition, the front camera across the entire iPhone 17 series will see an upgrade to 24MP. The iPhone 17 Plus, earlier rumored as the iPhone 17 Air, will adopt a slimmer profile and altered display dimensions. Battery capacity improvements may also be implemented, particularly in the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Waiting until September provides access to new features, better pricing options, and longer software support.
