Apple announced iOS 26 at its Worldwide Developers Conference, introducing the most significant visual overhaul of the iPhone interface since iOS 7. The update brings a new design called Liquid Glass, a complete redesign that reshapes the iOS experience and updates core apps to align with the new visual style.

The public rollout of iOS 26 is expected on September 15, 2026, coinciding with Apple’s Awestruck event on September 9, which will also see the debut of the iPhone 17 series. Apple has already released iOS 26 Beta 5, adding several new features and refinements. The beta program has provided a first look at interface changes, app updates, and system-wide improvements.

Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering, said that iOS 26 enhances daily interactions with the iPhone. From Lock Screen and Home Screen updates to improved Phone and Messages functions, users can focus on meaningful connections. Integrated Apple Intelligence tools streamline tasks across the system.

Following its WWDC debut, iOS 26 entered developer beta testing. A public beta is expected in early July 2025, ahead of the official launch. Developers and enthusiasts can enroll in the Apple Developer Program to access beta builds. To install, users can go to Settings, then General, then Software Update, and select Beta Updates to choose the iOS 26 Developer Beta. Apple advises backing up devices before installation to prevent potential system instability.

Some older iPhones will not support iOS 26, including the iPhone Xs, Xs Max, and XR. Compatible devices include:

* iPhone 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max

* iPhone 12, 12 Mini, 12 Pro, 12 Pro Max

* iPhone 13, 13 Mini, 13 Pro, 13 Pro Max

* iPhone 14, 14 Plus, 14 Pro, 14 Pro Max

* iPhone 15 and 16 series, including iPhone SE 2nd and 3rd generation and iPhone 16e

Apple Intelligence features, such as context-aware suggestions and real-time translation, will be exclusive to iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max, and the iPhone 16 lineup including iPhone 16e.

iOS 26 focuses on Apple Intelligence capabilities with new functionality across system apps. Updates include:

* Messages: personalized conversation themes, background customization, in-chat polls, typing indicators for group messages, and Apple Cash integration

* Phone: call screening enhancements and Hold Assist, keeping calls active until a human agent answers

* Apple Music and Maps: practical improvements for navigation, media, and daily tasks

* System-wide AI tools: intelligent summaries, visual actions, and translation features for smooth cross-app integration
