WhatsApp has rolled out a new update for iPhone, which permits temporary messages in the About section. The instant messaging application also allows users to set short About updates that would automatically erase after the selected period.
The functionality, which started testing in the previous month, spares the users of the hassle of updating their status manually. The users now have the option to specify the period their message would be visible, anywhere from a few hours to a full month. The updates which can be text and emojis, help users to quickly communicate their activity, emotion, or even availability.
The new updates are not hidden in the About section but are shown directly in the chat windows. The contacts are able to see messages like “In a meeting,” “Traveling today,” or “On a break” without having to check the profile. A countdown timer is included with each update showing how much time is left before it automatically disappears.
The privacy settings are the same so users can have complete control over these messages. At any time, the users can edit, hide, or limit the visibility of their About updates thus giving them the option to share less or more.
The About message under the profile picture of the contact in one-on-one chats is displayed as a tiny bubble with this update. It also shows up in the chat info screen so the user does not have to leave the conversation to get the context.
The use of emojis helps to clarify the short updates. For example, a coffee mug can mean “break”, a suitcase can mean “travel”, and a laptop can mean “work”. The purpose of the visible updates is to enhance communication thus reducing follow-up messages.
The feature is made available for more iOS users through the App Store rollout. WhatsApp has said that the new-about section with disappearing updates is included in the latest version, and wider availability is expected in the following weeks.
