An alert of the utmost importance for users of Google Android has been released by the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In). The notice pointed out the operating system's various security issues that could make it easy for hackers to get the user's private information or to interrupt the normal functioning of the device. It applies to all kinds of devices that run on Android, such as smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, etc.

Android versions 13, 14, 15, and 16 are the affected ones and they are used by many manufacturers so the list is quite long as well as varied from those manufacturers. Hackers will be able to do quite a lot with the help of these vulnerabilities, such as gaining higher privileges, accessing personal data, and making denial of service (DoS) attacks possible which may in turn lead to devices becoming unsteady.

The troubles are connected to several core components such as Qualcomm, MediaTek, NVIDIA, UNISOC, and Broadcom among others. Every vulnerability has been assigned a different identifier, for instance, the Android bug ID, and together they increase the risk to device security to a high level across several OEMs.

How to Secure Your Device

The first and foremost thing CERT-In suggests is to apply security patches as soon as they are made available by the manufacturer. Automatically updating the device will allow for the uninterrupted installation of critical patches. Moreover, strengthening the user’s passwords across different accounts, activating two-factor authentication in apps that involve any sensitive or financial information, and keeping the devices under watch and checking for any unusual activity are some of the preventive measures that have been put forward by the experts.

In India, Android is the base for a large number of devices and so timely updating and security awareness are the two main aspects for preventing data breach and system compromise. The alert is a reminder that both consumers and manufacturers need to be on the lookout as cyber threats are going to change and become more sophisticated.
