Vodafone Idea Denies Government Relief Talks on ₹84,000 Crore Dues
Vodafone Idea has clarified that it hasn't received any communication from the Indian government regarding the proposed ₹84,000 crore relief, dismissing media reports.
Vodafone Idea says no official word from govt on ₹84,000 crore relief.

Vodafone Idea (Vi) on Tuesday issued a clarification stating it has not received any official communication from the government regarding relief on its massive outstanding dues of ₹84,000 crore. The telecom operator’s statement comes after media reports suggested that the government was considering options to support Vi, prompting a 7% rally in the company’s stock.
The reports claimed that the Centre — already the largest shareholder in Vodafone Idea following the conversion of earlier dues into equity — was evaluating ways to provide further relief. The objective, according to the reports, was to prevent the telco from collapsing under regulatory pressure, especially given its fragile financial health.
In its regulatory filing, Vodafone Idea responded, saying:
“The company has not received any communication from the government regarding relief on dues. We will provide updates as and when any concrete development takes place.”
Vodafone Idea’s Financial Stress
As of March 2025, Vodafone Idea’s outstanding Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) dues stand at approximately ₹83,400 crore. These dues are to be paid in annual instalments beginning March 2026 and continuing through FY2030-31. In the current fiscal alone, the company is required to pay ₹18,064 crore by March.
Despite fundraising efforts and recent capital infusion, Vi’s cash and bank balance stood at ₹9,930 crore as of the end of March. The severe cash crunch has led to concerns within government circles, with reports suggesting that relief may be crucial for the company’s survival.
While no official plan has been announced, the buzz around potential support underscores the urgency to revive the financially strained telecom operator, especially in a market dominated by Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel.
Conclusion
Vodafone Idea continues to be under financial duress and has now publicly denied receiving any relief-related communication from the government. Market watchers and stakeholders await further developments on whether the government will step in with a concrete rescue package.
