Apple’s strategy to expand iPhone production in India is paying off for Tata Electronics, with the US emerging as the largest contributor to the company’s revenue. Shipments of iPhones to the United States accounted for nearly 37% of Tata Electronics’ earnings in FY25, amounting to over ₹23,112 crore, according to The Economic Times.

The shift underscores Apple’s ongoing efforts to reduce dependency on China and diversify its production footprint amid global trade uncertainties.

Exports to Ireland, Taiwan Also Significant

Following the US, Ireland contributed 23% of Tata Electronics’ revenue (₹14,255 crore), serving as Apple’s key European hub. Taiwan added another 15%, while domestic sales in India accounted for 20% of revenue, according to filings with the Registrar of Companies (RoC).

The increasing share of revenue from international markets reflects the rapid growth of iPhone assembly in India. Initially focused on local demand and exports to Taiwan, Tata Electronics has now shifted its attention heavily toward the US. Tata Electronics and Foxconn remain India’s two major iPhone assemblers.

Expansion Through Strategic Acquisitions

Tata Electronics’ production capabilities received a boost after acquiring Wistron’s India facility in March 2024, now operating as Tata Electronics Systems Solutions. The acquisition accelerated iPhone production and exports significantly.

Further expansion occurred in January 2025 when Tata acquired 60% of Pegatron Technology India for ₹1,650 crore. Renamed Tata Electronics Products and Solutions, the Pegatron plant in Tamil Nadu, along with the Wistron facility in Karnataka, now serves as major iPhone assembly hubs. Pegatron India reported an 84% revenue jump to ₹34,264 crore in FY25, though profit growth was modest at 1% (₹633 crore).

Apple Faces Delays in China

While India strengthens Apple’s global supply chain, the company faces challenges in China. The iPhone Air launch has been delayed due to pending approvals for eSIM technology, according to the South China Morning Post.

Apple updated its Chinese website, postponing the September 19 launch and noting that release details would be shared later. The company is “working closely with regulatory authorities” to resolve the issue. While China Mobile, China Telecom, and China Unicom are expected to support eSIM, only China Unicom currently has limited readiness.

This delay has frustrated consumers, as iPhones purchased abroad cannot yet use local eSIM services in China. Approval from Chinese authorities is awaited before the new models can be fully activated.
