The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is set to roll out a major performance upgrade to the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) system starting June 16, 2025. The goal? Make your payments faster, smoother, and more reliable.

In a circular issued on April 26, NPCI confirmed that transaction times will significantly reduce across the board. Status checks and refunds that earlier took up to 30 seconds will now complete in just 10 seconds. Sending or receiving money will also become quicker, dropping from 30 seconds to 15 seconds. Even address verification time is being cut from 15 seconds to 10 seconds.

🔑 5 Key Takeaways from the Update:

UPI transaction time cut from 30 to 15 seconds.

API response time halved for all banks and platforms.

Status checks and refunds will now process 75% faster.

UPI recorded 17.89 billion transactions in April 2025 — a 34% jump from last year.

Total UPI transaction value in April reached ₹23.95 lakh crore.

As India’s UPI ecosystem continues to grow at a rapid pace, these optimizations are designed to handle higher traffic while ensuring minimal delays. NPCI has instructed banks and payment platforms to upgrade their infrastructure to meet these new speed standards — but has also emphasized that transaction success rates must remain unaffected.

This upgrade follows a spike in failed UPI transactions earlier in April due to technical difficulties. Addressing the issue, NPCI had stated on social media:

“We are currently experiencing technical issues that are affecting some UPI transactions. Our teams are working on resolving the problem. We apologize for the inconvenience.”

With these upcoming changes, users can look forward to a faster and more reliable UPI experience starting mid-June.
