Samsung’s dominance in smartphone camera sensors, led by its 200MP modules on the Galaxy S23 Ultra, could face a major challenge. According to a report from Chinese tipster Digital Chat Station, Vivo’s upcoming X300 Ultra may feature two 200MP cameras, marking a potential first in the smartphone industry.
The tip suggests that the X300 Ultra’s main camera will use Sony’s flagship IMX09E sensor, while the periscope telephoto camera could adopt a sensor named IMX09A. Details about the distinction between the two sensors remain scarce, though the IMX09E is rumored to be Sony’s next-generation flagship camera sensor, possibly measuring 1/1.12 inches with 0.7-micron pixels, produced using an advanced 22nm fabrication process.
Alongside the dual 200MP setup, the telephoto lens is expected to employ a hybrid design that combines glass and plastic elements. The rear camera array will also include a 50MP ultra-wide sensor, while the front-facing selfie camera may sport a 50MP sensor with autofocus capabilities.
If confirmed, this move could shift the industry’s balance, ending Samsung’s role as the primary supplier of 200MP sensors for smartphones. Recent reports indicate that Oppo and Xiaomi may also consider adopting Sony’s new sensor, intensifying competition in the high-megapixel market.
Samsung could face further challenges with its own upcoming flagship, the Galaxy S26 Ultra, which is expected to continue using the ISOCELL HP2 sensor, the same module featured on all Ultra models since 2023. Critics suggest this repetition may leave Samsung vulnerable as competitors adopt newer technology.
Market analysts note that dual 200MP cameras could redefine smartphone photography, pushing the limits of resolution and detail in mobile imaging. Consumer interest appears strong, with polls showing that nearly half of users would consider purchasing a phone primarily for its 200MP capabilities, provided the rest of the device meets expectations.
Vivo has not officially confirmed the X300 Ultra’s specifications or release date, but anticipation is building as the brand positions itself to challenge Samsung’s long-standing camera dominance.
