Truecaller, the popular caller ID application, has unveiled a web client version, expanding its services beyond mobile platforms. Named "Truecaller for Web," this version offers Android users in India the convenience of accessing features like SMS and chat mirroring, call notifications, and number search directly from their desktops or laptops. Although initially targeted at the Indian market, Truecaller plans to extend this support to other regions in the future.
Android users in India can now link their devices to the web client via a QR code, enabling seamless synchronization between their smartphones and computers.
However, Truecaller imposes certain restrictions, limiting active web sessions to one and automatically signing out users after 30 days of inactivity. Users also have the option to manually unlink browsers from their accounts, similar to popular messaging apps like WhatsApp or Telegram.
Despite Truecaller's delayed introduction of SMS and chat mirroring, it aims to provide users with added convenience, especially for quickly responding to messages or accessing one-time passwords (OTPs) for various logins. Additionally, the web client eliminates rate limits previously associated with number look-ups on the company's website, offering users unrestricted access to this feature.
Real-time caller ID notifications for incoming calls further enhance the user experience.
Truecaller's move towards AI-driven functionalities has been evident in recent updates. The introduction of the "Max" feature allows Android users to block calls from unapproved contacts or spam, identified through AI algorithms. Moreover, the company expanded its services by introducing call recording and AI-powered transcription features in India, following their successful launch in the US last year.
Despite facing challenges such as a 32% stock dip in October 2023 due to lower revenues, Truecaller has shown signs of recovery, with its stock price rebounding from a low of SEK24.47 ($2.32) to approximately SEK31.68 ($3) at the time of reporting. This indicates a renewed investor confidence in the company's growth prospects and its ability to innovate in the competitive telecommunications market.
