TikTok Still Banned in India, But ByteDance Hiring in Gurugram Sparks Speculation
Despite TikTok’s ban in India since 2020, ByteDance is hiring in Gurugram. Government confirms no order has been issued to lift the ban.
ByteDance is hiring in Gurugram despite TikTok remaining banned in India since June 2020.

Even though TikTok remains banned in India, its parent company ByteDance is expanding operations in the country. The firm has posted new job listings in Gurugram, leading to fresh speculation about the app’s possible comeback.
ByteDance’s New Openings in India
ByteDance recently advertised two roles on LinkedIn under its Trust and Safety team in Gurugram:
- Content Moderator (Bengali Speaker): Requires fluency in English and Bengali, with responsibilities including the review of sensitive content.
- Wellbeing Partnership & Operations Lead: A project management role focused on health and wellness programs, involving up to 30% travel.
TikTok Ban in India
TikTok, once enjoying over 200 million Indian users, was banned in June 2020 alongside dozens of Chinese apps after the Galwan Valley border clash that killed 20 Indian soldiers. The government cited concerns over data security and sovereignty as the primary reason behind the move.
Since then, ByteDance has drastically reduced its India workforce but continues to maintain a small backend presence to support its global operations.
No Signs of Ban Being Lifted
Reports last week suggested some users accessed TikTok via desktop browsers, sparking rumors of an unblocking in India. However, government officials dismissed the claims.
“The Government of India has not issued any unblocking order for TikTok. Any such statement or news is false and misleading,” a source clarified.
As of August 2025, TikTok remains unavailable on both Google Play Store and Apple App Store in India.
