A viral AI trend known as the “Nano Banana” has captured social media users’ attention, but authorities are now issuing warnings about potential risks to personal and financial data.
The Nano Banana trend, popular on platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram, allows users to transform photos into miniature, cartoon-like avatars. While the trend is widely shared for entertainment, cybersecurity experts have highlighted risks associated with uploading personal images to unverified AI platforms.
Senior IPS officer V.C. Sajjanar has cautioned internet users to exercise restraint before engaging with the craze. In a recent statement on X, he warned, “Viral internet trends can be dangerous if personal information is shared. Users may unknowingly expose themselves to scams, including potential bank fraud, by uploading photos to unauthorised platforms.”
Cybersecurity specialists note that apps hosting such AI transformations often do not disclose how uploaded images are stored or used. Many platforms retain photos without consent and may repurpose them for undisclosed activities, raising long-term privacy and security concerns.
Though visually appealing and engaging, the Nano Banana trend highlights a broader issue of digital safety. Experts advise that users avoid sharing sensitive information online and refrain from using unverified AI tools that request access to personal data or bank details.
