Massive job cuts have shaken the global tech industry in the first five months of 2025, with more than 53,100 employees laid off across 126 tech companies, according to data from layoffs.fyi.

Intel has emerged as the most affected company, with reports indicating plans to cut nearly 20% of its workforce—just months after laying off 15,000 employees. Though Intel denied the scale of immediate firings, it confirmed that layoffs would roll out through the second quarter of 2025 and continue over several months.

In Europe, Swedish battery maker Northvolt slashed its workforce by half—letting go of 2,800 employees in March—shortly after filing for bankruptcy. The company had previously cut 1,600 jobs in September 2024.

Among U.S. tech giants, Meta, led by Mark Zuckerberg, has already laid off around 4,000 employees since the beginning of the year.

Google also made workforce reductions, initiating a voluntary exit program in January. In February, the company offered buyouts to U.S.-based staff and followed up in April with hundreds of job cuts in its platforms and devices division to improve operational agility.

These developments signal ongoing instability and restructuring in the tech sector as companies grapple with changing market demands, economic pressures, and the push for efficiency.
