Users of Spotify on various Android devices, especially Samsung and Google Pixel phones, have had to deal with a sudden system crash and freeze of the app in the last few weeks which put a stop to the usual music streaming. The issue gained a lot of attention on forums and social media platforms where users claimed the app closed or became unresponsive without any prior indication.
As per Android Police, reports from users mainly indicate that the problem happens when the device is connected to Wi-Fi. Strangely, the app works smoothly when mobile data is used. Switching Wi-Fi networks does not resolve the problem, which hints that the issue might not be restricted to one router or provider.
Spotify has acknowledged the bug and revealed that the engineers are working on diagnosing the problem. However, there is no mention of a specific date for the release of the update or the patch. Meanwhile, users are trying out temporary solutions — uninstalling and reinstalling the app, downgrading to a previous version, or staying away from Wi-Fi connections altogether.
In the course of solving the issue, some users have suggested another possible cause: the Wi-Fi-connected speakers. Occasionally, disconnecting these devices has made the app crash less often, but the outcome is not always the same. For users who do not want to give up the platform, using mobile data for streaming has become the most dependable although slightly expensive in terms of data consumption option.
This is not the first time that Android users have faced issues with playback discontinuation. Towards the middle of the year 2024 a similar problem had Spotify crashing on a number of Pixel users shortly after a song had started playing. The repetition of such incidents points to a possibility of app updates being in some cases not fully compatible with certain versions of Android.
A formal patch is not yet available, and consequently, the affected users have to weigh the options of reducing data use, downgrading apps, or temporarily switching to other streaming services.
