Snap has rolled out a new Snapchat app tailored for Apple Watch, focusing on quick communication through simplified text-based responses. The app delivers essential messaging functions to the wrist but omits core features like viewing or sending snaps.
The Apple Watch version allows users to view incoming Snapchat chat messages directly from their watch screen, stepping beyond previous notification mirroring. Users can now respond via:
* Mini keyboard typing
* Screen scribbling
* Emoji selection
* Voice-to-text dictation
These methods enable brief replies without needing to access a phone, targeting users who rely on wearables for quick connectivity.
Device Compatibility and Setup
Snapchat's watchOS support begins with Series 4 models or newer, running watchOS 9 or above. Users also need Snapchat version 13.35 or later on their iPhone. To activate the app:
1. Install Snapchat on the Apple Watch.
2. Enable Snapchat notifications on the watch.
3. In the iPhone’s Watch app, confirm Snapchat is selected under ‘Mirror iPhone Alerts From.’
How Users Can Interact on Watch
After setup, users will receive chat notifications as they arrive. By tapping the alert or lifting their wrist, they can access the message preview. A reply can be sent using any available input methods.
Current Limitations
* Only the first 100 characters of a message are visible.
* Replies are limited to chat notifications.
* Other message content types are not viewable.
Snap's expansion onto the Apple Watch contrasts with the recent withdrawal of wearable support by several major apps such as Instagram, Uber, Amazon, and Evernote.
