Smartphones or feature phones, what to choose?

A recent study conducted by CyberMedia Research (CMR) has shed light on a notable trend in India's mobile phone market. Despite the enduring popularity of feature phones as a crucial communication tool for many Indians, the study reveals that a significant portion of users are contemplating a transition to smartphones. Approximately three out of every four feature phone users expressed interest in making the switch, according to the survey which encompassed more than 2,000 respondents across major cities in India.

This growing inclination towards smartphones is attributed to the burgeoning digital landscape in India, which has sparked a heightened demand for accessible 4G smartphones and even the nascent 5G offerings, particularly within the sub-Rs 10,000 price bracket. Prabhu Ram, Head of the Industry Intelligence Group at CMR, highlighted that while consumers are increasingly seeking feature phones with enhanced functionalities such as UPI payments, the inherent limitations of these devices are nudging them towards smartphones, especially those that are affordable and equipped with 4G or 5G capabilities.

The study also unveiled key preferences among feature phone users, such as a desire for longer battery life, ease of use, affordability, and digital capabilities. Additionally, it disclosed that Indians spend an average of three hours daily engaged in various activities on their phones, including calls, alarms, texting, and utilizing apps like weather, news, and social media.

Despite recognizing the benefits of feature phones, users identified several drawbacks, such as inferior camera quality, limited access to advanced apps, and restricted internet connectivity. These limitations are cited as driving factors behind the shift towards smartphones, including models with 5G capabilities.

Overall, the study underscores the evolving dynamics of India's mobile phone market, characterized by a growing preference for smartphones fueled by the expanding digital ecosystem and the desire for enhanced features and functionalities among users.
