Samsung Electronics will host its much-awaited Galaxy Unpacked event on Wednesday, July 9, where it is expected to unveil its latest foldable smartphones — the Galaxy Z Fold 7, Galaxy Z Flip 7, and the Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE. Alongside hardware launches, the company is also anticipated to introduce OneUI 8, its next-gen software interface built on Android 16.
OneUI 8 has been in beta testing for several months and is expected to ship pre-installed on Samsung's upcoming foldable models. The new update may not overhaul the previous OneUI 7 but is believed to offer refinements and feature improvements aimed at delivering a more streamlined user experience. Below are five features likely to be part of the upcoming update:
1. Advanced Protection Suite
A core Android 16 capability, this feature is expected to arrive with OneUI 8, adding a layer of system security. The feature may allow users to prevent sideloading of apps, enhance theft protection, and apply encryption standards, helping users guard against data theft and malicious apps.
2. Expanded Now Bar Integration
Now Bar, which debuted in OneUI 7, is likely to gain broader functionality. Previously supporting limited applications, it is now rumored to offer live alerts and interactive elements across a wider range of apps and services, enhancing real-time engagement.
3. Enhanced Audio Eraser Tool
OneUI 8 is expected to introduce upgrades to Samsung’s Audio Eraser, an AI-powered tool popular among creators. The feature may now include easier access via the Gallery app and potential expansion to Samsung Notes and Voice Recorder, enabling sound editing across multiple platforms.
4. Flexible Split-Screen Layout
Samsung may incorporate a 90:10 split-screen multitasking view, similar to Open Canvas on rival devices. This will let users assign screen space based on task priority, allowing more flexibility during multitasking sessions.
5. Dynamic Visual Effects
An update to the current Live effect, Dynamic effect might allow for 3D-like transitions within images. The feature could also offer manual repositioning of subjects within photos, bringing interactive editing capabilities directly to the Gallery app.
The software upgrade and new foldable models are positioned to strengthen Samsung’s foothold in the premium smartphone segment. Industry watchers will be closely monitoring how the updates compare with rival UI enhancements from competitors like Google and OnePlus.
