Samsung is likely to preview its first-ever tri-fold smartphone, possibly named the Galaxy G Fold, during its upcoming Galaxy Unpacked event set for July 9.
Reports sourced from Android Authority suggest that Samsung’s new foldable device may incorporate a folding method similar to the Flex G prototype, which was earlier showcased by Samsung Display at CES 2022. The design is expected to involve a unique inward-folding mechanism with a cover screen embedded in the central panel.
The tri-fold approach differs significantly from existing foldables like Huawei’s Mate X series. Unlike Huawei’s outward-folding Z-pattern, Samsung’s implementation appears to fold both side panels inward, forming a compact G-shaped structure. When folded, the central segment—with its embedded cover display—remains visible and accessible.
A leaked instructional video found in a beta version of OneUI 8, based on Android 16, further supports the possibility of a tri-fold device. The video illustrates how NFC functionality will operate on a three-panel phone, hinting at the device’s near-final stage of development.
Additional insights from the video show the leftmost rear section housing a triple-lens camera system, visually similar to the current Galaxy Z Fold line-up. The central panel is expected to function as both the internal and external screen, depending on the folded state. The two folding hinges—reportedly different in size—could aid in achieving a cleaner fold, allowing the panels to align more precisely.
Another tutorial reportedly embedded in the beta warns users against folding the camera-side first. This precaution likely prevents obstruction caused by the camera bump, ensuring the phone closes flat without damaging the panel.
While Samsung has not officially confirmed the G Fold’s detailed specifications, the company is expected to tease or preview the device on July 9 alongside the introduction of its Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7 series. Industry insiders suggest a full launch for the tri-fold model could take place later this year, potentially by October.
