RIL’s Hanooman in fray against ChatGPT

Bengaluru: Indian enterprises, startups and academic institutions have started to bet big on Generative AI tools with the likes of Reliance Industries, Ola and a few others entering the fray.

A consortium of Reliance Industries and India’s top engineering schools announced the plan to launch India’s first ChatGPT-style service next month. The model, which is named as‘Hanooman’, got unveiled in the ongoing Nasscom Leadership Summit in Mumbai. If successful, India will have own generative AI tool like ChatGPT.

According to the information shared, BharatGPT will work in 11 local languages in four main fields such as health care, governance, financial services and education. This is being developed in collaboration with several wings of Indian Institute of Technology, Reliance Jio Infocomm and Indian government. Hanooman has multimodal AI capabilities for generating text-to-text, text-to-speech, text-to-video and vice versa content. BharatGPT’s effort is part of India’s effort to develop the technologies similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which can solve many problems faced by masses. This is a unique effort in which first private-public partnership of this kind is being done to make a robust model of AI.

Behind every generative AI model, LLMs (Large Language Models) hold the key as they learn from vast quantities of data and generate natural-sounding responses.

Apart from BharatGPT’s Hanooman, other such language model such as Ola’s Krutrim, SaravamAI’s OpenHathi and IIT-Madras’s Airavata are getting developed at this point of time.

In December last year, Ola has unveiled the project in collaboration with Krutrim Si. According to the company, Krutrimmodel understands 20 Indian languages and can generate content in ten of these.Hindi, Kannada, Marathi, Odiya, Telugu are among the languages it can generate content in.This LLM uses a custom tokeniser to interpret the languages and scripts.

While the base Krutrim model will be available for users in coming months, the more powerful Krutrim Pro will come after some time with advanced capabilities for problem-solving and task execution, the company has said.
