Google is all set to provide Gmail users with the option to change their email addresses, a feature that was largely unavailable to most users in the past. The feature is being rolled out gradually and promises a smooth transition by retaining account data.

The change was noticed first in Google's support documents for the Hindi language, suggesting that soon users would get the chance to swap their present Gmail addresses for new ones without losing any emails, photos, and messages. The email address you used before will still work as a secondary one meaning it will still be able to get messages.

With the new arrangement, a person can change his or her Gmail address a maximum of three times during the user's lifetime, subject to a limit of one change every 12 months. This gives users the ability to manage their email addresses flexibly without compromising on security and by restricting misuse.

In the past, Gmail users were allowed to change their account emails only if they had signed up with non-Gmail accounts. Gmail addresses were frozen and could not be altered, which led to many users being stuck with old or non-professional IDs.

The reactions on social media have been predominantly positive. A lot of people expressed their happiness that they might finally get the chance to stop using those old email ids which they created during childhood or experimenting with various ids. “This is good news. I have an email I made during Gmail's early invite-only phase. Now it’s connected to many accounts,” one user commented. Another user remarked, “I used my full name when I was 13 and now it’s linked to everything. Hope this feature rolls out in North America soon.”

Nevertheless, security professionals warned that the new feature might become a target for cybercriminals. The change of email addresses might become a tactic for phishing or social engineering attacks aiming at acquiring accounts. There has been no clarification from Google yet regarding the security measures that should be put in place.
