Reddit Down: Thousands Worldwide Report App and Website Access Issues

On December 9, Reddit, which is among the most used social media platforms globally, had a tremendous service outage that left many people unable to access either the site or the mobile application. During the outage, the site that tracks such incidents DownDetector mentioned that more than 24,000 users had reported their issues. Among them, the highest percentage, 73%, was unable to open the Reddit website, while 22% experienced server problems, and the remaining 5% had no access to the app.

The incident took place in many regions around the globe at the same time. Apart from people annoyed by the outage calling up their friends, most were sharing their mishaps and venting their irritation on social media especially X (the platform previously known as Twitter). There were even some who thought that the problem possibly has something to do with the already mentioned infrastructure upgrade, but Reddit has not given any formal answer.

Earlier this year, Reddit encountered service disconnections for the first time. The site that attracts millions of communities and billions of visits altogether, has been experiencing sporadic outages while still expanding its infrastructure to accommodate the high demand.

Users’ Feedback on the Outage

The users of Reddit did not take long before turning to social media to express their annoyance:

“Right now Reddit seems to be having some issues. On my end, the site is totally down and nothing is loading. Is there anyone else facing this outage? #Reddit”

“Reddit is one of the platforms I constantly use. I am totally astonished by what is going on and at the same time hoping the site will quickly sort this issue out!”

The access to the user-rich platform of Reddit will hopefully not be interrupted anymore through continuous improvements to its infrastructure and this will lead to the rare occurrence of outages.
