Realme announced a collaboration with Japanese camera maker Ricoh on Thursday, aiming to bring the classic photography experience of conventional cameras to its smartphones. The partnership will see joint development of advanced imaging systems designed for Realme devices, with features claimed to emulate the tactile feel and aesthetics of the Ricoh GR camera.
The first product resulting from this collaboration will debut on the Realme GT 8 Pro later this month. The new imaging technology is set to launch on October 14, offering improvements in optical performance, colour processing, image tones, and a tailored user interface to enhance the photography experience on mobile devices.
Realme highlighted that the collaboration is one of the “most profound imaging partnerships” in the smartphone industry. The two companies have been working together for four years, producing a “4 Years in One Snap” video that gives a behind-the-scenes look at the joint development process.
The Realme-Ricoh imaging system is designed to provide film-like visuals and five classic image tones, encouraging users to explore street photography. “Through this partnership, even users who typically do not use dedicated cameras can enjoy authentic snapshot experiences with the GT 8 Pro,” said Kazunobu Saiki, General Manager of the Camera Business Division at Ricoh Imaging Company.
According to Realme, the collaboration will provide tools for authentic image capture and creative expression, effectively merging conventional camera capabilities with mobile convenience.
This partnership positions Realme among a growing group of China-based smartphone makers collaborating with established camera brands. Xiaomi works with Leica, Vivo with Zeiss, and Oppo with Swedish manufacturer Hasselblad to co-develop advanced mobile imaging systems. OnePlus is also preparing to launch its proprietary camera engine with the upcoming OnePlus 15 series.
The Realme GT 8 Pro, featuring the new Ricoh-enhanced imaging system, is expected to be officially unveiled later this month.
