Google is making significant hardware changes to its smartwatch lineup with the upcoming Pixel Watch 4, scheduled to launch on August 20. While official details remain under wraps, consistent leaks are shedding light on what could be a major evolution for the wearable series.
The Pixel Watch 4 is confirmed to arrive in two size variants — 41mm and 45mm — according to Android Authority, which also revealed key design updates. Notably, the watch abandons the rear charging pins seen in earlier models. Instead, the new model features two metal contacts embedded in a side indentation opposite the digital crown.
The shift in charging mechanism is not merely cosmetic. With the charging interface moved to the side, the watch reportedly achieves 25 per cent faster charging compared to its predecessors. The updated design allows the watch to rest on its side, giving users clear visibility of the screen during charging — a practical touch for bedside or desk use.
The new approach to charging is believed to accommodate an updated sensor setup on the back of the device, similar to what was introduced in the Pixel Watch 3. Removing the rear contacts appears to have freed up internal space, enhancing both performance and design functionality.
One downside: backward compatibility has been dropped. The Pixel Watch 4 won’t work with previous charging accessories. A redesigned dock will be included in the box, though a USB-C adapter will still be absent. Google recommends using any 5W USB-C adapter.
In addition to charging changes, the Pixel Watch 4 brings improved serviceability. The rear housing is now removable, allowing easier access for repairs — a welcome change after criticism of earlier models for their unrepairable design.
With structural changes that support faster charging, better repair access, and enhanced daily usability, the Pixel Watch 4 is shaping up to be more than a minor refresh. It could represent a step forward in making Google’s smartwatch lineup both more functional and easier to maintain.
