Google will begin rolling out a mandatory Android 16 update for Pixel 6a smartphones starting July 8, following user reports of battery swelling and potential fire hazards. The initiative, part of Google’s newly introduced Battery Performance Programme, aims to enhance user safety through proactive software controls.
Though other Pixel 6 series models already received Android 16, the Pixel 6a was previously left out. The update activates advanced battery monitoring tools designed to reduce overheating risks by altering performance after prolonged usage.
Once a Pixel 6a device crosses 400 charge cycles, its charging speed and battery capacity will be recalibrated to extend lifespan and reduce risk. Ahead of this, users approaching 375 charge cycles will be alerted through in-device notifications.
Google clarified these performance modifications won’t take effect until the 400-cycle milestone is met. After activation, users may experience slower charging speeds and battery level variances while the device adjusts to new safety parameters.
Alongside the update, Google launched a dedicated support program for Pixel 6a units identified as affected under the Battery Performance Programme. Users have three options:
* Free device repair through authorized service centers.
* Monetary compensation for users opting out of repair.
* Discount vouchers valid on future Google Store hardware purchases.
Owners facing battery-related issues are urged to install the Android 16 update once it becomes available. Users can also contact certified service centers if problems persist post-update.
The Pixel 8a currently serves as Google’s budget offering, while the upcoming Pixel 9a is set to enter the premium mid-range segment.
