India’s Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has issued a critical alert warning about multiple vulnerabilities affecting a wide range of consumer electronics powered by MediaTek chipsets.

According to the high-severity advisory (CIVN-2025-0119) dated June 11, these flaws could potentially enable attackers to gain elevated privileges or disrupt system functionality. Devices at risk include smartphones, tablets, laptops, smart TVs, Wi-Fi routers, and other Internet of Things (IoT) hardware.

CERT-In explained that the issues arise from several types of software weaknesses in MediaTek's components, including heap overflow, null pointer dereference, incorrect authorization in WLAN modules, and uncontrolled recursion in IMS services. The advisory indicates that these vulnerabilities, if exploited, could be used to compromise personal data and business systems.

MediaTek has confirmed the existence of the flaws and issued patches to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). These patches are expected to reach end users via standard firmware updates distributed by device makers.

The chipmaker also published a detailed breakdown in its June 2025 Product Security Bulletin, outlining security vulnerabilities found across various product lines—spanning mobile devices, AIoT equipment, smart displays, OTT platforms, and multimedia systems. The company said that affected OEMs were notified at least two months in advance of the public disclosure.

All vulnerabilities have been evaluated using the Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS v3.1) to determine the severity and impact level. CERT-In has recommended users apply software updates as soon as they become available to mitigate potential exploitation.

This advisory follows a similar alert from CERT-In concerning Apple’s iOS and iPadOS platforms, which also contained critical flaws that could expose user data or disable devices.

In parallel developments, India’s smartphone market continues to see a downward trend. The latest shipment data reveals a 5.5% year-over-year decline in Q1 2025, with only 32 million units sold—marking the second straight quarter of reduced sales volume.
