Digital payments platform PhonePe has introduced a built‑in feature allowing users to pay credit card bills directly within the app. The move aims to streamline bill settlement by offering UPI, linked bank accounts or wallet as payment options.
PhonePe first launched credit card bill payments in 2018 through a partnership with Visa, becoming the country’s inaugural app to offer in‑app settlement of card dues.
To use the feature, customers must open the PhonePe app, tap ‘Recharge & Pay Bills’ and select ‘Credit Card’. After entering card details and payment amount, users choose their preferred payment method and confirm the transaction. Payments usually process instantly, though they may take up to 48 hours to reflect on the credit card account.
In February, PhonePe rolled out device tokenisation for credit and debit cards. This replaces sensitive data such as CVV and PIN with a unique token, reducing the risk of data exposure during transactions.
PhonePe also supports RuPay credit cards for UPI transactions. Cardholders can link their RuPay card under ‘My Money’, set a UPI PIN and complete payments seamlessly. Currently, only RuPay credit cards are eligible for UPI payments.
The in‑app credit card payment feature offers round‑the‑clock access, multiple payment channels, built‑in reminders and no additional fees, meeting growing demand for convenient and secure digital bill settlement.
