NRIs Can Now Use UPI in India Without Indian Mobile Number

IDFC First Bank has rolled out a new Unified Payments Interface (UPI) feature, enabling Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) to make digital transactions in India using their international mobile numbers linked to NRE and NRO accounts.

Previously, UPI access required an Indian mobile number, restricting overseas users from convenient digital payments for services like bill settlements and fund transfers. This initiative removes that hurdle, allowing NRIs to participate in India’s UPI network without maintaining an Indian SIM card.

Customers can now link their international mobile numbers to UPI through IDFC First Bank’s digital platforms or physical branches. Post-verification, these users can transact through any UPI-enabled application, including QR code scans and direct transfers, similar to resident users.

As of now, the feature accommodates numbers from six countries: the United States, United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates, Canada, Australia, and Singapore. The bank has indicated its intention to extend the support to additional countries in subsequent phases.

This launch aligns with the Reserve Bank of India’s agenda to expand the global footprint of India’s digital payment infrastructure. The facility is expected to support NRIs in handling financial commitments such as sending money to family, managing investments, and fulfilling property-related expenses within India.

Looking ahead, IDFC First Bank plans to broaden its digital banking suite for NRIs, with upcoming services that include investment tracking, utility bill payments, and EMI processing via UPI platforms.
