Meta has introduced passkeys for Facebook logins on iOS and Android devices, marking a significant step toward eliminating passwords. The update enables users to sign in through fingerprint, face recognition, or device PINs—methods already used to unlock smartphones.
Passkeys, built on standards developed by the FIDO Alliance, provide a phishing-resistant alternative to conventional passwords. Unlike traditional credentials, passkeys are securely stored on users' devices and are not susceptible to reuse or guesswork. Importantly, Meta does not access users’ biometrics or PINs.
Steps to Enable Passkey Login
* Navigate to Facebook’s Settings
* Access the Accounts Center
* Select the passkey option to generate or manage one
Users may also be prompted to create a passkey during their next login attempt. Once configured, the passkey can be used to sign in on compatible mobile devices without entering a password.
Meta confirmed plans to integrate passkey login into Messenger in the coming months. Future updates will also bring passkey functionality to Meta Pay and encrypted message backups.
Although passkeys are now available, other login options—including passwords—will continue to be supported, offering flexibility for users with unsupported devices.
By replacing passwords, passkeys aim to reduce phishing attempts and unauthorized account access. Meta positions this feature as an additional security layer, joining other major platforms like Apple, Google, Amazon, PayPal, Microsoft, and TikTok that have adopted similar login technology.
