Nothing has launched the open beta of its OS 4.0 update, built on Android 16, expanding access to a wide set of its smartphones. The update brings changes to the interface, camera system, and multitasking tools, alongside new AI and widget options.
The beta program is available for Nothing Phone (3), Phone (2), Phone (2a), and Phone (2a Plus). With this release, the company ensures that not only the flagship but also previous models can participate in testing.
Users will notice redesigned lock screen clocks, quicker access to Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and other controls in Quick Settings, and a new “Extra Dark Mode” that reduces strain during night use while potentially conserving battery power.
A new Pop-up View allows two app icons to float on the display. This feature enables faster switching between applications such as messaging and navigation, without needing to exit and reopen screens.
For the Phone (2) series and Phone (2a Plus), the update adds a “Stretch” camera preset created with input from a professional photographer. The mode adjusts shadows and highlights for enhanced contrast, functioning like an in-built stylistic filter.
Phone (3) introduces an AI usage dashboard, which shows when background AI processes are active. The company says this will give users a clearer picture of how intelligent features run on their devices.
Nothing OS 4.0 also debuts “Essential Apps,” which allow users to create simple widgets by describing tasks such as “track my steps.” These can be shared via the Playground community and placed directly on the home screen. Phone (3) can host up to six of these widgets during the beta, while earlier models are limited to two.
To participate, users must download the Beta Updates Hub through Nothing’s community portal. From there, enrollment requires navigating to Settings > System > Nothing Beta Hub, tapping Join Beta, and then checking for a system update. Registration for the open beta remains available until October 14, 2025.
