Markus 'Notch' Persson, the creator of the iconic Minecraft, has stirred excitement among fans by hinting at the development of a spiritual successor to the original game. In a recent burst of activity on social media, Notch announced he might begin working on "Minecraft 2" following a fan poll on his X (formerly Twitter) account.

The Poll That Sparked It All

Notch asked fans whether they would prefer he continues developing his current project—a roguelike game blending traditional dungeon crawling with tile-based first-person mechanics—or starts working on Minecraft 2. Unsurprisingly, the prospect of Minecraft 2 won by a landslide, capturing 77% of the vote.

In a follow-up post, Notch confirmed his seriousness about the poll's outcome, essentially announcing that he would proceed with "Minecraft 2." He referred to the project as a spiritual successor rather than a direct sequel, given that he no longer owns the Minecraft brand after selling it to Microsoft years ago.

What Could ‘Minecraft 2’ Look Like?

Details about Minecraft 2 remain scarce. Notch has indicated that the game won’t use the Minecraft name, aiming to avoid infringing on Mojang's ongoing work with the original. Instead, the project will seek to capture the spirit of Minecraft while introducing new ideas and gameplay mechanics.

Notch has acknowledged the challenges of reimagining such a groundbreaking game. Yet, as the creative mind behind the original, he is uniquely positioned to innovate while paying homage to his earlier work.

Why Now?

In recent social media interactions, Notch shared that he has enjoyed working in an office environment for the first time in years. This newfound energy has rekindled his passion for game development. Despite claiming he doesn’t have a strong preference for either project, he noted that "Minecraft 2" might be the more lucrative choice—even if it turns out “bad,” as he jokingly remarked.

A Word of Caution

While fans are understandably excited, Notch has tempered expectations, warning that Minecraft 2 or his other project might never see completion. Financially secure from the success of Minecraft, he emphasizes that his motivation lies in enjoying the creative process rather than monetary gain.

A Long Wait Ahead

Should Notch proceed with Minecraft 2, it’s likely to take years before the game becomes playable. Unlike the original, which was developed quickly, this project will face heightened scrutiny and anticipation, which could slow its progress.

A Side Note on Memes

Amid these announcements, Notch also confessed that he’s “mostly over” the Skibidi Toilet meme, adding that he doesn’t understand its origins or meaning.

While fans eagerly await updates, the possibility of Minecraft 2 remains an exciting prospect. Whether it becomes a reality or stays a dream, one thing is clear—Notch’s creativity continues to captivate the gaming world.
