Google has added a new feature called "System Service" within the Privacy & Security section of Android settings, aimed at improving transparency and efficiency in how essential background services are updated.
This new dashboard, found in Settings > Privacy & Security > System Service, provides users with a categorized list of internal Google services responsible for maintaining key functions on Android smartphones. The dashboard categorizes services under sections like "Available Updates," "Uninstalled," and "Renewable."
The services listed here are distinct from core Android OS updates. They include functionalities responsible for feature activations, device security enhancements, and enabling core components for third-party applications. These services are frequently updated through the Google Play Store on a monthly cycle.
If automatic app updates are disabled in the Play Store, users might unknowingly miss crucial system service updates. Google's newly launched interface intends to solve this gap by giving visibility into which background services require attention.
Although the dashboard offers the option to disable or delete some services, doing so is discouraged as it can interrupt essential device functionality.
The "System Service" dashboard is compatible with devices running Android 6.0 Marshmallow and later. Users not seeing the feature right away are advised to install the latest Google Play system updates and restart their devices, which will trigger the integration of this dashboard.
