Microsoft will officially end support for Windows 10 later this month, affecting millions of PC users across India. Users will have to either pay for extended support or transition to Windows 11, a move that could strain budgets and require hardware upgrades.
The company has introduced a paid Extended Security Updates (ESU) plan for personal users, allowing them to continue receiving updates for one year. The cost is approximately $30 (around Rs 2,550), though local pricing in India remains unclear. Microsoft says ESU coverage will run from October 15, 2025, to October 13, 2026.
Microsoft has also outlined a no-cost alternative, though it comes with conditions. Users can claim a free update by redeeming 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points or by backing up data to the Windows Backup cloud app. Points are earned by engaging with Microsoft services, including Bing searches, purchases from the Microsoft Store, playing Xbox games, and other activities tied to a Microsoft account.
Experts caution that accumulating the required points can be time-intensive, particularly with the October deadline approaching. While the free route exists, many users may prefer the ESU plan for its convenience and reliability.
Despite Windows 11 being the recommended path forward, upgrading often requires purchasing a new device with compatible hardware. For many, paying for an ESU plan is a temporary solution that allows continued use of existing PCs while planning for a future upgrade.
Analysts say that the phase-out of Windows 10 reflects Microsoft’s strategy to move users to newer systems while providing flexibility for those not ready to switch immediately. With millions still reliant on Windows 10 in India, the company’s limited options balance revenue generation with user retention.
Microsoft chief Yusuf Mehdi emphasized in a blog post that the ESU program ensures security updates remain available for personal devices, giving users time to transition at their own pace.
