Microsoft has begun rolling out the much-anticipated Recall feature to select Windows 11 laptops, specifically those built on the new Copilot+ PC platform. Announced earlier this year, Recall is part of the April 2025 Windows 11 non-security preview update and will gradually become available over the next month.

What is Windows Recall?

Recall is designed to help users quickly locate previously accessed apps, files, and websites through a visual timeline of their activities. Instead of hunting through folders or trying to remember exact file names, users can simply scroll back through their PC activity or describe what they’re looking for in their own words.

Microsoft claims that Recall can cut down search times by up to 70% compared to traditional methods.

Importantly, Recall is an opt-in feature that prioritizes privacy. All data stays locally on your device—it is not uploaded to Microsoft servers or third parties. Users can also control what gets saved or choose to turn off Recall at any time.

Can You Use Recall on Your Laptop?

Recall is exclusive to Copilot+ PCs, which come equipped with dedicated neural processing units (NPUs) to handle AI tasks locally. These new PCs boast up to 13% faster performance than the MacBook Air M4, alongside enhanced battery life and security features.

Brands offering Copilot+ PCs eligible for Recall include Microsoft Surface, Dell, HP, Samsung, Acer, and Lenovo.

Currently, devices powered by Snapdragon X Series chips are receiving Recall first. Copilot+ PCs using AMD Ryzen and Intel processors are expected to get the feature in the coming months.

To use Recall, your device must meet these conditions:

It must be a Copilot+ PC.

It should be running the April 2025 Windows 11 non-security preview update.

You can enable Recall through Windows Settings and customize privacy preferences to your liking. Microsoft has also shared detailed instructions for both personal users and enterprise IT teams to manage and secure the feature effectively.
