Meta has officially launched Direct Messaging (DM) on its microblogging platform Threads, aligning with the app’s second anniversary celebrations on July 3. The long-awaited update brings private communication capabilities to Threads, offering users a new way to interact beyond public posts.
🔒 Private Messaging Now Live
Available to users aged 18 and above, the new feature allows one-on-one messaging between followers or mutual Instagram connections. Users can initiate chats by tapping the message icon on any eligible profile. Meta says the age and follower-based restrictions aim to promote safe and respectful interactions on the platform.
“Thread users had been awaiting the option to DM each other,” said a Threads spokesperson, calling the feature a major step toward enriching user communication.
📱 A Familiar Yet Unique Experience
By introducing DMs, Meta brings Threads closer to Instagram’s communication model, while still carving out its own niche focused on text-based, meaningful conversations. Meta has confirmed plans to expand the feature with:
- Message request controls
- Inbox filters
- Group chats
- Custom messaging settings
These tools are aimed at enhancing safety, privacy, and usability for Threads' growing user base.
📈 Threads Growth & User Engagement
Two years since launch, Threads has steadily grown in popularity. Meta shared that over one-third of Threads users follow accounts they don’t already follow on Instagram, indicating a gradual shift toward Threads as an independent social space.
✨ New 'Threads Highlighter' Feature
Alongside DMs, Meta is also rolling out Threads Highlighter—a feature designed to surface trending conversations and popular topics. This visual indicator helps users discover real-time discussions, boosting overall engagement and visibility for active threads.
🚀 A More Engaging Threads Experience
With the introduction of private messaging and content discovery tools, Meta is reinforcing its commitment to making Threads more than just an Instagram offshoot. The updates aim to blend simplicity with control, positioning Threads as a safe, vibrant space for real-time conversations.
As Threads continues to evolve, users can expect even more features that focus on privacy, meaningful engagement, and a community-first experience—further establishing it as a rising star in the competitive social media landscape.
