Perplexity has rolled out its AI-powered browser, Comet, to all users on Windows and macOS. The browser, which was previously available only to Perplexity Max subscribers, can now be downloaded for free.
Unlike traditional browsers such as Chrome or Firefox, Comet replaces the standard tab layout with an integrated workspace. The interface is designed to help professionals and researchers manage online information efficiently. Millions of users had signed up on the waitlist before today’s open release.
At the center of the browser is Comet Assistant, a built-in AI tool similar to Microsoft’s Copilot in Edge. It allows users to ask questions about web pages, generate summaries, or perform navigation tasks automatically. The assistant can follow user activity, track what they read or research, and recommend relevant material in real time. Inactive tabs close automatically, and the browser can restore previous sessions with reminders of ongoing work.
Each new tab in Comet includes its own assistant, enabling simultaneous queries across different topics. Users also get access to several integrated tools — Discover for news recommendations, Shopping for comparing product prices, and modules for Travel, Finance, Sports, and other categories.
Some premium tools remain exclusive to Max subscribers. The Email Assistant, which drafts context-aware replies, and the Background Assistant, which executes multiple background tasks, are both limited to paid accounts.
