A lot of ChatGPT users on Reddit have reported their saved memories being mysteriously deleted as a result of tech glitches. Users were in unison when expressing their discontent, and one of them even said: “Everything is just gone,” which is, of course, a reflection of the wider issue of data loss.

ChatGPT's memory functionality represents the user-tuning-by-shedding-light-on-past-interactions approach, thereby making future chats more personal. The function can hold on to names, the user's writing style and the preferred tone, besides giving the context of their work (students, developers, or content creators) such as projects. When operating as intended, the memory function facilitates personalized responses from ChatGPT that are implicitly aligned with the user's habits and goals.

OpenAI has received the feedback, recognizing it as a technical glitch of a temporary nature, and indicated that the issue has been resolved. Nevertheless, the problem of partial or completely erased memories is still being reported by a number of users, and this has led to fears regarding the security of retained data.

It is possible for users to see the ChatGPT memory status.

To tell whether the memory is on, users need to go to the ChatGPT application or website, go to their profile, and click on Personalisation. To ensure there is no interruption in sessions, they should make sure that both Reference saved memories and Reference chat history are turned on.

Though OpenAI has not made a provision for automatic backups as yet, users could still take precautionary measures to manually keep their data secure:

Open Settings > Personalisation, then go to the Memories section and click Manage.

Look at everything that ChatGPT has stored as your saved information.

Transfer the text to a safe document or notepad.

This guarantees that there will be a record in place in case of any disruptions in the future.

In case memories disappear, logging out and logging back in can sometimes bring back some info. At the moment, there’s no way to straight away import backups. Users have to do it the hard way by using the command: “Remember that [insert details].” Even though it is a bit monotonous, this method slowly reconstructs the personalized chat experience.

OpenAI recommends that users always keep the personalization switches on and also make manual backups until the memory feature becomes fully reliable. Regular users who depend on the memory function are advised to take measures to prevent the loss of their stored preferences again.
