Jack Dorsey, the co-founder of Twitter and CEO of Block, has introduced a new decentralized communication tool called Bitchat. Designed to function without internet connectivity, the app enables users to exchange encrypted messages via Bluetooth mesh networks.
Bitchat connects smartphones directly without relying on Wi-Fi, mobile data, or central servers. Using a mesh networking system, messages hop between nearby devices until they reach the intended recipient, extending communication beyond standard Bluetooth range. This setup proves effective in environments with no or limited network access, including festivals, remote locations, and emergencies.
Unlike traditional platforms such as WhatsApp or Telegram, Bitchat collects no user data, requires no phone number or account registration, and avoids server dependency. All communication is encrypted end-to-end, maintaining privacy even if the message passes through other users' devices.
Bitchat functions on peer-to-peer architecture. Phones equipped with the app detect each other over Bluetooth, forming a mesh network. Messages can travel up to 300 meters and even further using intermediary devices. The platform prioritizes user anonymity by eliminating identifiers like phone numbers or email addresses.
Key features include:
* Bluetooth Mesh Networking: Facilitates peer-to-peer messaging without internet.
* End-to-End Encryption: Utilizes X25519 key exchange and AES 256 GCM for secure communication.
* Channel-Based Chats: Allows group messaging with optional password-protected access.
* Store & Forward: Holds messages for offline users and delivers once they reconnect.
* Cover Traffic: Sends random dummy data to hinder tracking and protect privacy.
* Emergency Wipe: Triple-tap gesture erases all stored data instantly.
* Adaptive Power Use: Smart battery management with configurable scanning intervals.
* Privacy Design: No registration, account setup, or contact linking.
* IRC-Like UI: Simple commands like /j and /m enable easy navigation.
* Performance Boosts: LZ4 compression and efficient scanning improve speed and battery efficiency.
* Cross-Platform Support: Available on iOS and macOS, with Android version in development.
Currently, Bitchat is in beta and accessible to iOS users via Apple’s TestFlight. The early release has quickly hit the 10,000-user limit, highlighting widespread interest in a secure, serverless messaging alternative. Android compatibility is on the roadmap as the development team continues refining the app.
