Google has launched the second beta of Android 16 QPR2 (Quarterly Platform Release) for eligible Pixel smartphones. The update introduces security enhancements, new customization options, performance improvements, and expanded health tracking capabilities.

Android 16 QPR2 Beta 2 adds a developer verification feature aimed at reducing malicious apps. Only apps from verified developers will be allowed on certified Android devices. Google plans a phased rollout starting in select regions from September 2026. New APIs in this beta also allow verification of apps installed via APKs outside the Play Store.

To prevent interception of one-time passwords (OTPs) sent via SMS, the update delays delivery of OTPs by three hours for most apps. Messaging, phone dialer, Google Assistant, system apps, and apps using the official SMS retriever API are exempted. This measure is designed to enhance user security without disrupting core functions.

Android 16 QPR2 Beta 2 introduces additional options for app icon and folder shapes, allowing users to personalize home screens more extensively. Users can choose new icon styles and folder previews according to their preferences.

The update includes a “Generational Garbage Collector,” which optimizes memory management by clearing recently used data efficiently. This reduces CPU load, minimizes lag, improves animation smoothness, and can lead to better battery performance.

Health Connect now tracks steps automatically using built-in phone sensors without requiring a separate fitness app. Apps with permission can access this step data directly. Additionally, new workout tracking features allow logging of exercise details such as sets, weight lifted, and perceived effort (RPE), offering more comprehensive fitness monitoring.

Android 16 QPR2 Beta 2 with the September 2025 security patch is available on the following Pixel models:
