Is HMD Global home of Nokia phones?

HMD Global, the Finnish mobile phone manufacturer and official licensee of Nokia's brand, has announced its intention to launch a new brand focused on meeting consumer telecommunications needs. Jean-Francois Baril, CEO of HMD Global, made this announcement on LinkedIn on September 11. While the company has successfully operated as "HMD - the home of Nokia phones" for the past six years, it is now preparing to enter the market independently and carve out a unique space in the telecommunications industry with a new brand.

Although specific details about products under this new brand have not been disclosed, it is anticipated that HMD Global will continue its partnership with Foxconn, the manufacturer responsible for producing Android phones under the Nokia brand. The company has historically concentrated on the budget and mid-tier smartphone segments, and it is likely that this approach will persist as it establishes its new brand presence.

HMD Global was founded by former Nokia executives with the objective of revitalizing the Nokia brand and introducing Android-based smartphones to the consumer market after Microsoft relinquished its rights to the Nokia brand in 2016. Given the strong influence of ex-Nokia executives within the company, this strategic move represents an opportunity for HMD Global to build on the brand's legacy under a fresh identity.
