Cybersecurity researchers have identified a rare zero-click attack that exploited flaws in WhatsApp and Apple software to compromise iPhones, prompting urgent warnings for users to install updates immediately.
Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, confirmed the issue and said attackers exploited two linked vulnerabilities to access targeted devices. The spyware campaign required no action from victims; simply receiving a maliciously crafted message could allow hackers to gain access.
Apple has already issued a system patch to address the vulnerability in its image-handling framework. WhatsApp also released security updates to block the exploit. Both companies are advising users to check for and install the latest versions of iOS and WhatsApp as a precaution.
Meta said fewer than 200 users were notified of being targeted, most of them journalists, human rights workers, and public figures often at risk of surveillance campaigns. Those directly contacted were told to erase their devices completely, reinstall the operating system, and set up WhatsApp only after applying updates. Experts say this step ensures any spyware is removed.
Although the attack appears highly targeted, experts warn that messaging apps like WhatsApp remain attractive targets for attackers because of their wide global usage. Security researchers say applying updates promptly is one of the simplest ways to block these threats.
Steps for Users
* Check the App Store for the latest WhatsApp update.
* Install all available iOS and security updates.
* Follow factory reset instructions if WhatsApp has contacted you directly.
