The future iPhone of Apple, iPhone 18, planned for 2026, is going to be an important change in the display design of the company and is, thus, probably going to be the last one with the visible front-facing camera. The rumors suggest that the iPhone 18 Pro will get Face ID technology hidden in the display, and the selfie camera might be there, seen for the last generation, up to 2027 when it finally completely vanishes.

The gradual transition towards a seamless display is representative of Apple's long-term aim of a hardware piece free of borders, notches, and punch-hole aspects. Jony Ive, the former Apple design head, often paradigmatically characterized the perfect iPhone as “just a single piece of glass.” However, this vision might finally come true within the next two years as the mid-year product cycle gets over.

Insiders say that the iPhone 18 Pro of next year will sport the smaller of the two possible new features for the front camera - the punch-hole design - in place of the Dynamic Island, and the Face ID sensors will be underneath the display. The leaker Digital Chat Station has it that by the year 2027, not only will the selfie camera be completely located under the screen, but that this change will also signify the arrival of the first truly all-screen iPhone just in time for its 20th birthday.

The attempts at under-display cameras have been going on for years within the Android ecosystem but have been facing technical challenges over and over again. The layers of displays may distort light and, thus, reduce the sharpness and color fidelity of the image, all of which are uncertainties Apple has reportedly decided not to encounter. The company appears to be dealing with these problems by using new display transparency, advanced sensor algorithms, and computational photography enhancements, so that it can keep the image quality for its flagship phone.

The expected timeline of Apple's front-camera transition is as follows:

iPhone 18 Pro (2026): In-display Face ID along with a punch-hole selfie camera.

In the year 2027, the iPhone 19 series will boast of a completely under-display Face ID and camera with no cutouts at all.

This spells out that, for the customers, the iPhone 18 will probably be the last handset with a clearly exposed front camera, while the phone of 2027 might present a totally continuous display for the device's first time ever. Apple had been working step by step towards this look for a long time, and the following up model may ring the bell for the totality of Front Panel, giving us a Display Only front with No Visible Sensors or Cameras.
