Apple has introduced its latest flagship, the iPhone 17, signaling an end to the 128GB base storage era. The new entry-level model now starts at 256GB, offering consumers more storage without moving to higher-priced variants.

The iPhone 17 incorporates a 1-120Hz display across all models, previously limited to Pro variants. This upgrade provides smoother scrolling and an always-on display without the premium price tag. The screen now features an anti-reflective coating and 3,000-nit peak brightness for improved visibility in bright environments.

Camera enhancements set the iPhone 17 apart from older models. The ultrawide rear camera has been upgraded to 48 megapixels, while the front-facing camera now captures 18-megapixel selfies. New features such as Center Stage adjust selfies between portrait and landscape automatically, and Dual Capture allows simultaneous recording with front and rear cameras. These features are exclusive to the latest model and not available on older devices through software updates.

Comparing iPhone 17 With Previous Models

* iPhone 16: The iPhone 17’s 6.3-inch display replaces the 6.1-inch screen of the iPhone 16, supported by slimmer bezels. Both devices share a 48-megapixel wide camera, but iPhone 17 upgrades ultrawide and front cameras. Battery life has improved modestly, with up to eight additional hours of video playback. Charging speed has increased to 40 watts from 25 watts. Despite these changes, the differences are incremental, meaning iPhone 16 users may not feel compelled to upgrade unless faster display and charging are priorities.

* iPhone 15: The iPhone 15 and 17 share several core specifications, including the main camera and display size. However, iPhone 17 introduces Action and Camera Control buttons, a 48-megapixel ultrawide camera, and Apple Intelligence features like AI-assisted photo editing and live translation. Battery performance has also seen slight improvements. Users with iPhone 15 may choose to upgrade primarily for AI capabilities and hardware refinements.

* iPhone 14: The switch from Lightning to USB-C is one of the most notable changes from the iPhone 14 to iPhone 17. Dynamic Island, Action button, and upgraded cameras further differentiate the two models. Satellite connectivity and eSIM support are retained, while new camera features enhance both photography and video recording.

* iPhone 13: Users of the iPhone 13 may experience more pronounced benefits with iPhone 17, including a larger display, new hardware buttons, USB-C charging, and Apple Intelligence features. Battery longevity and overall device speed are also improved.

* iPhone 12: The jump from iPhone 12 to 17 offers the largest gap in performance and functionality. The iPhone 17 delivers a larger, smoother display, upgraded dual 48-megapixel cameras, USB-C connectivity, and AI-powered software tools. Video playback has nearly doubled, with Apple citing up to 30 hours on iPhone 17 compared with 17 hours on iPhone 12. These upgrades may justify a replacement for users of devices older than four years.

Overall, while the iPhone 17 brings meaningful enhancements in display, camera, battery, and software, the extent of the upgrade depends on the age of the current iPhone. Users of iPhone 16 or 15 may find the improvements incremental, while owners of iPhone 13 and older models can expect significant gains in performance and features.
