Reports about the iPhone 17 series’ durability and basic functionality are drawing growing attention. Users have raised concerns over its susceptibility to scratches, as well as frequent complaints regarding poor call quality—a fundamental feature of any smartphone.

Bloomberg News recently visited Apple Stores in New York, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and London to inspect iPhone 17 units. The investigation found visible scratches on several devices within hours of being on display. Scratches were most commonly observed on the frame and rear panels, often when MagSafe chargers or ring stands were used. The situation has been informally referred to as “scratch gate.” U.S.-based tech site The Verge also reported that the aluminum edges surrounding the camera are prone to damage and peeling.

Apple launched the iPhone 17 series emphasizing hardware upgrades rather than artificial intelligence capabilities, unlike competitors such as Samsung and Google. However, even the hardware claims have faced criticism. Apple described the main display of the iPhone 17 as “larger and brighter, with three times improved scratch resistance.” For the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max models, the company highlighted “threefold enhanced scratch resistance” and the use of “Ceramic Shield” rear glass for added durability. The iPhone Air, promoted as the thinnest iPhone ever, reportedly features a stronger titanium frame to increase toughness.

Concerns extend beyond physical damage. PhoneArena, a technology-focused media outlet, conducted an online survey indicating nearly half of iPhone 17 owners reported cellular problems, including weak call quality. The survey found these issues occurred across major U.S. carriers and mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs).
